Archive for the ‘What I'm Listening To’ Category

Hey guys,

I am kinda starting to get slack with news and such so I have nearly decided to just do the “What I’m Listening To” segment (which I know you all love) for the time being, just while I catch up on some things, so I will try and release them more regularly. This week I have a new clip from Boy & Bear, a softer song from Biffy Clyro, a grouse new song from Washington, a clip from one of my new favourite bands Eleventh He Reaches London, and a mad live version of a song by Efterklang.

Have fun…

1. “Rabbit Song” by Boy & Bear

These guys are really beginning to make a name for themselves, and this track will be the one to put them in the spotlight. It is a really laid back song with an awesome video.

2. “Manny Of Horror” by Biffy Clyro

Hopefully if I get some friends I will be seeing Biffy Clyro live tomorrow night at the Hi-Fi bar. This is a track off their amazing album “Only Revolutions” and shows the softer side of the band.

3. “Rich Kids” by Washington

Dam she cool, like really cool.

4. “Oh, Brother” by Eleventh He Reaches London

I have to thank my mate El Capitano for showing me this amazing band. This track is absolutely awesome in every way check it out and let me know what you think.

5. “I Was Playing Drums” by Efterklang

This live version gives so much light to the original song and if you haven’t checked these guys out yet, I suggest you do by starting here.

Hey guys,

Wow new albums are coming out left right and centre, what am I going to do with myself. This week I have a new clip from Parades, a beach song from Local Natives, a psychedelic masterpiece from Tame Impala, an awesome new one from Cloud Control, and a bit of shoegaze from The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart.

Have fun…

1. “Loserspeak In New Tongue” by Parades

Finally Parades have released their debut album “Foreign Tapes” wooooooo. This is one of the new singles off it and is quite strange structurally, anyway have a listen and see if you like it.

2. “World News” by Local Natives

I really like Local Natives debut album “Gorilla Manor” and over the past few weeks has just been growing so much more on me, and I think it is a real contender for a top spot on lists at the end of the year. This is a real “as the video suggests” beachy song.

3. “Solitude Is Bliss” by Tame Impala

It’s psychedelic gold with with vocals reminiscent of a young John Lennon, an amazing effort from these guys, I cant wait for their new album.

4. “This Is What I Said” by Cloud Control

Cloud Control have always been one of my favourites and this is a new track from them off their first full length “Bliss Release”, really a great song, especially on those long drives.

5. “Higher Than The Stars” by The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart

This is a really interesting song which caught my eye, kinda sounds a bit ’80s to me, anyway have a listen and tell me what you think.

This week I have a killer track from Avi Buffalo, some new Deftones, some chirpy stuff from The Radio Dept. an absolutly amazing track from Dead Letter Circus and some great stuff from The Tossers.

Have fun…

1. “What’s It In For” by Avi Buffalo

Avi Buffalo have just released a standout album of the year which I think sounds like a very folky/acoustic MGMT, I am really digging it and I think these guys will get pretty big soon. Thanks for the heads up WeAllWantSomeoneToShoutFor.

2. “Diamond Eyes” by Deftones

I am freakin’ adoring the new stuff from Deftones and I cant wait to get my hands on the new album. This track is absolutly awesome, I hope the rest of the album is as good as this.

3. “Heaven’s On Fire” by The Radio Dept.

The new album from The Radio Dept. “Clinging To A Scheme” is definitely a contender in my eyes as one of the best albums of the year, this is the newest single off that album. It is so tasty I just want to eat it up.

4. “Big” by Dead Letter Circus

Talk about most anticipated albums, I have been waiting for a full length effort from Dead Letter Circus for ages. Finally the new album is upon us, and this is the new single.

5. “Katie At The Races” by The Tossers

A good old Irish tune from The Tossers, if your into stuff like Dropkick Murphys or The Pogues, you should love this.

Hey guys,

Since last week was kind of a special/unusual “What I’m Listening To” I have decided to do another one for you guys, aren’t I nice. Anyway this week I have for you a song from one of my new favourite bands The Kissaway Trail, a really cool track from Veil Veil Vanish, an old favourite from Maxïmo Park, one of the best songs ever by Neutral Milk Hotel, and an upcoming single from Biffy Clyro.

Have fun…

1. “SDP” by The Kissaway Trail

Wow this is an awesome band that I discovered only just recently and have fallen in love with. They are from Denmark and this song “SDP” is one of my favourites of the year.

2. “Modern Lust” by Veil Veil Vanish

Thank you Sunny for showing me this band. If you like The Cure, then you will love this.

3. “Books From Boxes” by Maxïmo Park

This is one of my old favourites that I have only started really getting into again recently. It is a really nice song and is one that will always be popping up in my music listening sessions.

4. “In The Aeroplane Over The Sea” by Neutral Milk Hotel

This is perhaps one of my favourite songs of all time from one of my favourite albums of all time. It is a big statement yes, but if you know Neutral Milk Hotel, you could see how I could state this, and if you don’t know Neutral Milk Hotel, then by the end of listening to this song you will see too.

5. “Bubbles” by Biffy Clyro

All though this song is on Biffy Clyro’s newest album “Only Revolutions” which was released at the end of 2009, they have decided to release it as a single, with a brand spanking new video, for your hearing and viewing pleasure.

Hey guys,

Ok now for something completely different. So, last night I went to see funny man Ross Noble strut his stuff at the Palais Theatre in St Kilda, with my main men (minus a few) Age and Hen. After bingeing on some MicyD’s we made our way over to the theatre for the start of the show. As we sat down blue grass filled the air, but not your typical blue grass, oh no, this was unlike anything imaginable, and for god sake their was a lizard/octopus/turtle monster in the room with four Ross Noble heads (apparently one had a stroke). Anyway the song we heard were an array of covers from Green Day to Europe all done with a distinct bluegrass feel, I admit I was intrigued. The next day I searched long and hard for these songs and it eventually paid off, because I found a SHIT-LOAD. So for this week’s what I’m listening to I am filling you with blue grassy covers.

Btw, I CBF soing little descriptions for each of the songs, so I’m just putting the main info.

Have fun…

1. “When I Come Around” by Honeywagon

Ok so this is a cover of Green Day’s classic “When I Come Around”

2. “Breaking The Habit” by Cornbread Red

How I love this cover of one of my favourite Linkin Park songs.

3. “Fade To Black” by Iron Horse

Metallica at it’s folkiest.

4. “Clocks” by Old School Freight Train

Instrumental version of Coldplay’s song, would nice with some vocals but still good.

5. “Paranoid” by Iron Horse

And finally Black Sabbath’s Paranoid.

Hey guys,

I just got back from my holiday in Queensland so, sorry for not having updated you guys with anything for the past few days, but what can you do. Anyway here is the newest “What I’m Listening To”. This week we have a song from Jónsi’s new solo album, an Angus song from Angus & Julia Stone, a really quirky one from Darwin Deez, a prophesy from Incubus, and a new song from Midnight Juggernauts.

Have fun…

1. “Boy Lilikoi” by Jónsi

I wasn’t feeling too good on the plane, but Jónsi helped me through it. This is one of the many amazing songs from his debut solo album after announcing the hiatus of his band Sigur Rós.

2. “Big Jet Plane” by Angus & Julia Stone

This is one of those sad but awesome songs. It has a really calm progression throughout the song, and I think it is one of the highlights on the new album.

3. “Radar Detector” by Darwin Deez

This is a really cool song, very quirky and uplifting. It has a really fun quality to it, and has a really cool video aswell. What more could you want.

4. “A Certain Shade Of Green” by Incubus

“Are you gonna stand around ’til 2012 A.D.?/ What are you waiting for, A Certain Shade of Green?.” Well…are you? This song is off Incubus’ 1997 album S.C.I.E.N.C.E which in my opinion is one of their best. This song is funk metal in the greatest sense.

5. “Vital Signs” by Midnight Juggernauts

Loving the new Juggs and cant wait for the new album, honestly how much longer do I have to wait. This song is simply grouse with a really psychedelic video clip. Check it out.

Hey guys,

It’s holidays so I have been a bit slack recently, but the next “What I’m Listening To” is here. This week I have a beautiful little number from Local Natives, an underrated classic from The Beatles, a great song off Secret & Whisper’s new album, a laid back track from The Radio Dept, and electro filled experience with an awesome video from Caribou.

Hope you enjoy…

1. “Airplanes” by Local Natives

This is a really nice song with really moving lyrics and great musical elements. These guys will be topping some lists at the end of the year, check out this song from their new album “Gorilla Manor”.

2. “Girl” by The Beatles

This has to be one of my favourite song by The Beatles. It is one of their songs that is sometimes overlooked even though I think it is a great example of their true skills as songwriters. If you haven’t heard this song, give it a go and tell me if you think it’s underrated.

3. “Warrior (Southern Arrowwood)” by Secret & Whisper

This is the first single off “Teenage Fantasy”, an album which I have been waiting ages for. The new track shows that while keeping the Secret & Whisper sound, it still manages to stay fresh. The new album is out today.

4. “David” by The Radio Dept.

I discovered this band about a year ago when I was playing pool at Red Triangle. I heard it coming through the speakers and had to ask the guy who they were. He offered to put all their albums on a memory stick if I had one, but I didn’t, so I downloaded some stuff as soon as I got home. Anyway this is a track off their upcoming album, and it is a great one.

5. “Odessa” by Caribou

This is a really cool track with a killer opening riff. It is quite different from the old stuff, but it is still a great track. New album is coming out soon.

Hey guys,

I am releasing the newest “What I’m Listening To” a bit early because I am going to be really busy in the next few days. This week I have a classic from The Receiving End Of Sirens, a possible “list-maker” from The Morning Benders, some of the best music you will ever here from This Will Destroy You, a solo song from Sunny Day Real Estate singer Jeremy Enigk and a cool new rap song that samples MGMT from Chiddy Bang.

Hope you enjoy…

1. “Excuses” by The Morning Benders

I think this might be one of my favourite releases so far this year. This song and indeed The Morning Benders newest album “Big Echo” are both exceptionally well executed and are a pleasure to listen to. I think the song and their new album have a lot of potential to be in a lot of “Best Of” lists at the end of the year.

2. “Mind Idea” by Jeremy Enigk

This is a an awesome song from Sunny Day Real Estate singer Jeremy Enigk on his latest album “Ok Bear”. I really enjoy this song, kind of my secret chill song that I’m sharing with you guys.

3. “Planning A Prison Break” by The Receiving End Of Sirens

I have been listening to this song heaps recently, because my band Middle Children Of History are going to be doing a cover of it, and it is pretty much been me practising it on guitar with the song in the background. It is good listening to old songs again once in a while.

4. “Grandfather Clock” by This Will Destroy You

These guys are simply amazing. Do yourself a favour and get behind them, because they make some of the best music I have heard.

5. “Opposite Of Adults” by Chiddy Bang

This is a cool song which samples “Kids” by MGMT. I found it not to long ago, and I am really digging it, the video isn’t that bad either.

Hey guys,

I have been studying for my English SAC so I have been listening to music (as always) to help me from losing my mind. This week features some new songs from Minus The Bear and Gorillaz along with some older ones from Sunny Day Real Estate and MewithoutYou. I also have an amazing live track from Manchester Orchestra too.

Hope you enjoy…

1. “My Time” by Minus The Bear

This is a little different from their older stuff, but still pretty cool and very catchy. Synths still play a major role however. Their new album OMNI is due out for a May 4th release, so stay tuned for more info on thet.

2. “Superfast Jellyfish” by Gorillaz

Wow this is a cool song, it has successfully made itself sound like an old commercial jingle, and I reckon it is grouse. Check out their new album “Plastic Beach” if you haven’t already cause I think it is their best to date.

“All Hail King Neptune & His Water Breathers”

3. “The Fox, The Crow & The Cookie” by MewithoutYou

This is a song that I have always loved and have recently started listening to their old stuff more and more. It is a really cool story with great lyrics and a very baroque feel. It has been 3 years guys, give me some new stuff, I am dying.

4. “The Ocean” by Sunny Day Real Estate

I am so pumped for the new album in the works because I honestly think that Sunny Day Real Estate are one of the best. This song is off their 4th album “The Rising Tide” and it is absolutely beautiful.

5. “Everything To Nothing (Live Version)” by Manchester Orchestra

I think Live At Abbey Road is one of the best music shows out there, I watch close to every episode. Last year, to promote their album “Mean Everything To Nothing”, Manchester Orchestra were featured on it and played an amazing “then” new song “Everything To Nothing”. Watching it was amazing and has remained one of my favourite live videos since.

Hey guys,

Wow…it’s raining, like alot. City flooding was a spectacle, anyway back to the point. So I have been listening to some cool stuff this week, some new stuff, some French stuff, you know how it goes. So yeah enjoy these few songs that I’ve been listening to this week.

I want to leave you with a small quote, illustrating the amount of rain there has been in Melbourne.

“consulting the bible on the proper dimensions of an ark…” AF

1. “Audience” by Cold War Kids

This is an extremely catchy song, makes you feel happy with the realisation of homework due, SAC’s upcoming, and weather crappy.

2. “The High Road” by Broken Bells

Very interesting song, laid back and chilled.

3. “Spanish Sahara” by Foals

I’m liking the new sound of Foals. I love the old stuff don’t get me wrong. I hope the new album has a good balance of the two. Awesome clip and a great song.

4. “Little Dolls” by Indochine

Awesome French band who formed in the 80’s, this song is off their new record “La République Des Meteors”. Awesome song, kinda reminds me of Muse with French lyrics.

5. “So They Say” by House Vs. Hurricane

The synth on their new album is absolutely ridiculous, it is just epic. Make sure you pick up a copy of their new album “Perspectives” at JB or anywhere else.
